Meeting Notes February 2023

We welcomed 23 members to the meeting, it was especially good to see a former member Stuart Durrant who has recently re-joined the Club and will shortly be purchasing a GL1800 3rd Generation DCT Goldwing. Nice to have you back in the fold Stuart.

Apologies had been received from Bill & Pinky, Harry & Gaynor, Bob & Sonja, Ian & Jayne, Nigel & Sarah, Jeff & June, Malcolm & Irene, Myra and Ken.

Barry read out a “Thank You” card that had been received from Chris (‘the raffle’) for her surprise 80th mini-birthday party we had held for her last month. She was very grateful.

We presented our big cheque for £2,500 to Blood Bikes Wales (BBW) via Jason Hall the BBW PR Officer. These funds had come from our 2022 Wing Ding with Bow’s Head Shave (£2,000) and from our reserves as agreed at our AGM (£500). Jason kindly provided us with a detailed overview of the current work of BBW including a new project concerning Sepsis hospital samples, ongoing work with Covid samples and the Charity’s intention to change its motor cycle fleet to Honda following a previous disastrous change to BMW from Yamaha. BMW’s had turned out to be very unreliable for the nature of the charity’s work. Costs of running the charity were continuing to rise and our contribution was very much appreciated. Jason then left our meeting.

Barry reminded the meeting that renewal of GWOCGB 2023 Membership was now long overdue, renewal forms are available from him or from the GWOCGB Website. Membership cards for renewed members had been posted and should be received shortly

Barry reported on the trip to Pencoed, Bridgend whereby we assisted a family to dispose of a 2000 GL1500 following the death of the owner. The Wing, which had needed quite a lot of restoration, had been purchased by Derek Hackett from West Wales Wings. Both purchaser and family had been happy with the transaction and were very grateful for our help in the matter.

The GWOCGB Member’s Open Meeting at Bromsgrove had been held earlier in the day and Roger reported on matters that had been discussed. 39 members plus the National Committee (NC) had attended which included four members from South Wales. On the face of it this was a disappointing turn out but the flip side to this is that members are happy to see how the Club is running and therefore do not see a need to attend to query matters. Some NC positions, including the Treasurer, are due for election at the AGM in April, 2023 and on-line voting forms will be published on the Website on 1 March, 2023. GWOCGB finances are still healthy and membership numbers are being roughly maintained although the average age of the Wingers is slowly getting older. We have quite a few members over 80. An additional Wing Ding at the Broadlands Region is planned on the 2 to 4 June at Frimley, more details can be found in the GWOCGB Events page on the Website. The Bromsgrove Hotel & Spa where the meeting had been held for the first time was excellent in terms of accommodation, catering and meeting facilities. We will be there again at the AGM.

The South West Classic Bike Show at Shepton Mallet Showground is taking place on Saturday/Sunday 25/26 February, 2023. Tickets are £14.50 each including parking. A number of South Walians are intending to attend, and, if you are interested, please get in touch with Barry soonest.

We have received an invitation to attend the Panteg House Classic Car Show at Griffithstown on Saturday, 20 May, 2023, 1000 to 1700. Several members indicated they would like to attend so we will let the organisers know. More details to follow.

There is the possibility of planning a visit to the Dutch Treffen at De Steeg, travelling Dover to Dunkirk/Calais, out on Wednesday, 24 May, 2023 back Bank Holiday Monday 29 May, 2023. If you would like to go contact Barry soonest.

We have also received an invitation to provide an escort for a Bride, daughter of Derek Hackett, West Wales Wings at Begally, Pembrokeshire on Saturday 2 September, 2023 at 12 noon. Unfortunately, this date clashes with the Llandudno Light Parade weekend which many South Walians attend. A few members indicated an interest in providing an escort and I will let Derek know the situation.

We are planning to arrange a Certificated First Aid at Work Course towards the end of the year ready for our 2024 Wing Ding. If you are interested in attending, please let the Regional Officers know.
